Anachronique: Creedence Clearwater Revival (Rock)

Still in Rock’s Sixties section presents old bands (from the 60s, then) that left their mark on the history of rock and influence today’s.

The band presented here is Creedence Clearwater Revival, aka CCR. Their first success dates from 1968 with their song “Susie Q”. It is steeped in psychedelic rock that the band cut its teeth, at a time when the Beatles were competing (and outclassing everyone) in ingenuity in that field.

“I Put A Spell On You” would be the second hit from their first album. This CCR period is the one I am particularly fond of – hence my selection of songs to listen to -. CCR went on to release a second album in 1969, on which they proudly embraced the bayou-rock label, “Proud Mary” being by far their best-known song of all, across all their albums. “Keep On Chooglin“, a marvel of blues and rock that recalls the Rolling Stones, also appears on this new CCR record. A must-listen, without fail.

Having played the Woodstock festival, CCR drew on the atmosphere of the event to release an album with a bluesier sound than the previous ones. This third album, titled “Willy And The Poor Boy”, was the band’s third to sell more than a million copies. And yet I remain convinced that few of you had this band’s name in mind.

This legendary band, which was successively called Blue Velvets, The Visions and Golliwogs before finally preferring to refer to a brand of beer (Clearwater), thus left its mark on the history of rock. Long live their exceptional music.
