The Only Ones (Punk Rock)

Anachronique: The Only Ones (Punk Rock)
After a few weeks away, the ‘Anachronique‘ section is finally back, a good way to start the week. In the spotlight today: The Only Ones, one of the founding bands of Punk Rock, a group far too underrated and little known.
The Only Ones are an English band formed in 1976 in London. Their short career, four albums in two years, from 1978 to 1980, is remarkable for the consistency of each of their creations. It is nonetheless their first album, self-titled, that remains their finest creation, ten tracks full of very infectious energy. The Only Ones’ influence is far wider than the press as a whole seems willing to admit. Of course, the parallel with Violent Femmes (here) is obvious, so close are the voices of Peter Perrett (The Only Ones) and Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes) at times. The Only Ones also influenced a good number of Blur’s songs. How can you not think of the Libertines, when creations such as “Don’t Look Back Into the Sun” and “Death On The Stairs” could have been written by the Only Ones. Ah … and I almost forgot, because it is a small world, Peter Perrett’s son was one of the founding members of Babyshambles.
This band, which split in 1982 and re-formed in 2007, remains a symbol of freedom, a music without borders where the members’ imagination seems to guide every one of their songs entirely. For this reason, The Only Ones are a particularly exhilarating band, putting their punk rock in the service of unpretentious songs. Their lyrics do not try to deliver an important message, only to evoke a youth enjoying good times, encounters and friendship. The Only Ones were a symbol of a lot, a band that deserves to be brought back into fashion, so relevant are its music and philosophy. Ah, how good it is to start the week with the one and only.
