Anachronique: Built To Spill – Perfect From Now On (Indie Rock)
Built To Spill is an American band formed in 1992 in Boise (Idaho). Initially made up of three members including Doug Martsch, and reshuffled many times since, Built To Spill is an Indie Rock band that left its mark on the grunge period of the 90s. Still active, their best album, released in 1997, is called Perfect From Now On. I could not write this post without also mentioning Keep it Like a Secret, released two years later and just as extraordinary.
Perfect From Now On is an eight-track opus whose best piece is unquestionably “I Would Hurt A Fly“. This song of more than six minutes is clearly the most effective Built To Spill ever wrote. Impossible to categorize, mixing grunge, pop, punk and indie rock, this track could be the anthem of the underground generation of the 90′s. Its psych rebirth at the 5th minute is an integral part of its legend.
If Built To Spill is forgotten by many today, its influence remains significant. The Strokes, for instance, present themselves as fans from the very beginning (they must have been rockers very young), from the pre-Waner Bros. Records era. While I don’t endorse every song in Built To Spill’s discography, I can certify that their seven studio albums are full of wonders that I cannot recommend highly enough. Built To Spill’s strength is never to take the listener where he thinks he is going: the instrumental tracks are often made of the most beautiful anthems, the Indie Rock compositions always veer off course, and Built To Spill, song after song, year after year, stands out as a band worth knowing.
