Buzzcocks (Punk Rock)

Anachronique: Buzzcocks (Punk Rock)
Buzzcocks is an English band from Bolton, formed in 1976 and led by the great Pete Shelley. With 9 studio albums to its name, the last dating from 2006, Buzzcocks is one of the most representative bands of the English Punk/New Wave movement of the ’80s. There is nothing better to start (and continue) with Buzzcocks than Singles Going Steady 1977-1979, a compilation of everything the band produced in its early days. Fasten your seatbelts.
What makes Buzzcocks recognisable from the first seconds of every track is the incredible energy the band has always given off. It goes without saying, Buzzcocks feels like a mystical experience, a pill in which all the darkness of Manchester has been coupled with ironic and murderous lyrics. A forerunner of a faster, over-connected world, Buzzcocks always produced music that some have called “Fire Punk“. Listening to Buzzcocks reveals a pressing need for even more, a gripping and very demanding liveliness.
Several songs helped give the band the very special place it deserves on our vinyl shelves. Any doubt is dispelled from the first track, “Orgasm Addict”: Buzzcocks is an English band proud of its punk. “Everybody’s Happy Nowadays” is of the same ilk. How could you miss its huge influence on the work of The Libertines or The Strokes? This song is surely one of the band’s best, although not the most representative. “Noise Annoys” stands out just as much as one of Buzzcocks’ most precious creations. “Pretty girls / Pretty boys / Have you ever heard your mommy scream / Noise annoys“. These lyrics, which keep coming back, accompany a guitar solo that it is impossible not to worship. “What Do I Get?” is one of those songs written into posterity. Raw and direct, the music as much as the lyrics made Buzzcocks the legendary band it is today. And then, as usual, it is impossible not to mention a few more Buzzcocks tracks, so much does this band deserve an entire book: “Autonomy“, “Harmony In My Head“, “What Ever Happened To?“, “Why Can’t I Touch It?“, and many more. Buzzcocks, for everyone who would like to feel what it is like to wear a leather biker jacket with a baseball bat on your shoulder.
