Anachronique: Galaxie 500 (Shoegaze)

Galaxie 500 is a Boston band formed in 1986. Named in tribute to the car of one of their friends (here), Galaxie 500 is one of the leading bands of the post-punk underground movement. While its members were studying at Harvard University, Galaxie 500 made three albums: Today, released in 1988 (don’t miss “Instrumental” (here) and “Tugboat” (here)), On Fire in 1989, and This Is Our Music in 1990. The last remains their most complete creation, a true Shoegaze masterpiece where lo-fi and progressive rock find fabulous common ground.

The album opens with “Fourth of July” (here), a firework display where Dean Wareham’s voice recalls Lou Reed’s nonchalance. Very quickly comes “Summertime” and my first question: do you really need more to understand that Galaxie 500 is a band capable of the very best? There is something of Sonic Youth and the Pixies in this track, something intoxicating. Just before it is “Spook” (here), one of their hardest songs to get into. “Listen, the Snow Is Falling” (here) is another demonstration of the quiet strength that is Galaxie 500, almost eight minutes of perfectly controlled psychedelia, Velvet Underground-style. The ultimate masterpiece remains “Melt Away“. This track leaves you speechless, managing to produce such a creation commands the greatest respect. Finally, it is “Here She Comes Now” that brings the record to a perfect close. This track, released on the 1997 reissue of the record by Rykodisc, lets Galaxie 500 end on a fine lo-fi touch, a finale worthy of what this LP represents. Once again, the reference to the Velvet Underground is obvious, borrowing the name of one of the songs from White Light/White Heat. This Is Our Music is certainly a formidable musical epic that will delight shoegaze fans, those who like to take their time and contemplate the soundscape.

Original version (French)

L’ultime masterpiece demeure “Melt Away“. Enfin, c’est “Here She Comes Now” qui vient parfaitement conclure l’opus.
