Anachronique: Blue Cheer (Psychedelic Blues Rock)
Blue Cheer is a band formed in San Francisco in the late ’60s. Blue Cheer is a band that produced eleven studio albums, music that wavered between blues and stoner but always with psychedelia, a band named in tribute to LSD, a band recognised for opening new horizons for the guitar. Because it would be illusory to try to review Blue Cheer’s entire body of work, today I would like to stress the greatness of Vincebus Eruptum, the band’s second album, released in 1969.
This album opens with the band’s biggest hit, “Summertime Blues“. Here Blue Cheer brings in everything it does best, there is some Hendrix, some Who, some Ten Years After, and a melody recognisable among all others. Let it be said, this track is an essential in any record collection that claims to be rock, an anthem for everyone who loves the electric guitar. Leigh Stephens does far too great things on it for you to miss this song. The album continues with a more delicate “Rock Me Baby“. Oh, Blue Cheer was not the first to pass this way, we could not forget B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Jimmy Vaughan. Add to this legendary song Blue Cheer’s guitar bursting in at 2:15 and you have an unmissable track. “Doctor Please“, the third track, is the longest on the album. Blue Cheer twists its guitar around for almost eight minutes. Those not into long solos (do they exist?!), stay away. Next comes “Out Of Focus“, surely one of the Top 3 in the band’s history. The energy this track gives off rekindles all the sexual tension of Woodstock, of years of music history. The rhythm is relentless. Blue Cheer has the very good idea of following up with “Parchment Farm“. Here we find one of the most mythical creations it ever produced. Americans describe this music as “loud“. Add the adverb very a dozen times and you will slowly get closer to the truth. The last track is none other than “Second Time Around“, a song in the same vein, Dickie Peterson’s bass is as present as ever, and the seconds left to the drums are just a perfect build-up to the final explosion.
Blue Cheer played a big part in the “psychedelic revolution”, Blue Cheer gave Noise Rock its credentials. Before he walked out the door, Jim Morrison called the band the “most powerful band I’ve ever seen“. I could not agree more.
