Anachronique: Country Teasers (Country Punk)

Country Teasers, “pastoral — not rustic“, that is how the band described its music. This anachronique article definitely stands apart. We will set out to present The Pastoral, the band’s first record, released in 1995. Above all, this anachronique article will be about an album that feels like being jabbed with the dose needed to excite a dairy cow.

But first, some introductions. Country Teasers is an English band formed in 1993. It released a grand total of 5 studio albums, from Crypt Records through Fat Possum to In The Red Records. Yet the band remained very much under the radar. Far too much. But there you go, you could almost understand why.

The album opens with “How I Found Black-Brodie“. You understand immediately that Country Teasers is going to dazzle us. The screeching in the background hints at a massive explosion. It comes when you least expect it. And then, almost perversely, “Only My Saviour” comes along to make us believe in a peaceful country album, the farmer by his cabin. Well, we already suspect the trickery. The tracklist already gives clues. “Bitches’ Fuck-Off” could not be a peaceful love song. And it surely isn’t. Country Teasers’ super heavy guitar makes a strong appearance. “O, Nurse!”, the next track, is possibly the best song the band ever wrote. Lasting barely more than a minute, “O, Nurse!” needed no longer to transform us into a zombie on a day of human shortage. The farm is burning, everything goes, it is a splendid carnage.

The story of “Anytime, Cowboy” and its friendly lady confirms that the action takes place somewhere in the southern United States. As for the rest, we are still wondering. Then “Mosquito“, the album’s other absolutely-unquestionably-superbly-brilliant track, comes to sting us with the same quantities cows need. “You’re an animal, get away from me“, he said. After slaughtering everything, “Drove a Truck” brings a semblance of Texan dolce vita. Provided you don’t listen to the lyrics, of course.

“Been Too Long“, we are still wondering what Ben Wallers is talking about, is frankly exceptional. In the manner of Violent Femmes (“Comon dad, gimme your car“), Country Teasers is a lovely love story to tell little girls. Oh no. Oh yes. “Black Cloud Wandering” at full blast, “Black Cloud Wandering” with the syringes fully loaded, that’s it, we no longer know where we are. Surely somewhere in a hospital where the doctors spend their time in the back room. Oh, a pharmacist. Oh, an explosive guitar. Well now, little punk, what are you doing here? The Country Teasers effect, probably. “Stand By Your Man“, one of the band’s best-known creations, once again turns a country cupcake girls into a Nirvana groupie. Finally, “Number 1 Man” finishes us off for good.

This album certainly has no equal. When do you get the chance to describe an album as country mixed with a really dirty kind of Garage, but psychedelic too, and Punk, not forgetting its Pop strength that echoes a mind-blowing Stoner. But country all the same, eh. Ah, Country Teasers is the kind of band you never forget. NEVER.

Beaucoup trop. Mais voilà, on comprendrait presque pourquoi.
L’album s’introduit sur “How I Found Black-Brodie“.
“You’re an animal, get away from me“, qu’il disait.
“Been Too Long“, on se demande encore de quoi Ben Wallers parle, est franchement exceptionnel. L’effet Country Teasers, probablement.
Cet album n’a assurément aucun égal. JAMAIS.Country Teasers – O, Nurse!
Country Teasers – Mosquito
