Culotte

Pas Chère
EP, Of Bits & Pieces, 6 October 2019

ENCulotte is Knickers’ side project, a band from Switzerland who made a name for itself last September with the release of Bored. Culotte sings in French. Culotte likes post-punk. Culotte wants his music to be punchy, and his lyrics to be enigmatico-pornographic. If he’s wondering how to plug a hole with eighties-punk music in the background, he ends up confessing his need for tenderness when he’s in the shower (his trick: “give the ass”). These 20 minutes are great news for anyone interested in the Francophone punk scene. Culotte manages to explore many of its sub-genres, always in support of an excellent production. For instance, I don’t think I’ve heard better drums than on “Idées Noires” since Naomi Punk. What a hit! And what about the guitars on “Love Shack“, a kind of power-rock as it was done in the early 2000s. This EP should propel the band at the forefront of all the venues surrounding its home base.

Nick Shoulders

Okay, Crawdad
LP, Tape Dad Records, 19 December 2019

ENNick Shoulders is a country artist from who seems to have been raised by Elvis, Buck Owens, Arlo Guthrie and those fifties artists who lived for the beat. His second album, Okay, Crawdad, was released last December via Tape Dad Records (known for trashy music). It follows Lonely Like Me (2018), already a country LP that brought him acclaim from the underground scene. Nick Shoulders’ music is excellent in every way, but it certainly dates back to a time and a style that people under 20 don’t seem to appreciate. He delivers nonetheless a new set of 13 songs matching the quality of hits from the fifties that can still be heard at dinners in central-United States. His voice is not only very well placed, but is also distinguished by pop melodies that deserve the honors that the cute pop scene is unjustly taking away. The beat of “Rather Low” and “Ding Dong Daddy” is simply too good to be true in the 2020s. Greil Marcus said of Elvis that you could deduce his movements by listening to his voice. The same compliment must be paid to Nick Shoulders.

Pourquoi donc ?

Johnny & The Rotten

“Mojo, No!”
LP, Burger Records, 1 February 2020

ENJohnny & The Rotten, it’s an Austrian band that is begging us to imagine “the Beach Boys having weird, dirty, sweaty sex with Sonic Youth and their baby turns out to be an angry punk that doesn’t give a fuck about the dos and don’ts of how to behave as a band”. All right. On February 1st, he will release Down the Rabbit Hole, an album which is announced to be a real happy garage-punk mess like we haven’t heard since King Gizzard is no longer stuck in 2013. The first single, “Mojo, No!“, will please the fans of everything that goes fast, that is too colorful, lo-fi, trash, and in the end noisy. To be continued, I’ll probably talk about it again.

The Beach Boys having weird, dirty, sweaty sex with Sonic Youth and their baby turns out to be an angry punk that doesn‘t give a fuck about the dos and don‘ts of how to behave as a band”. D’accord.

Liquids

2 Soft Serves and a Hard Rock
EP, 24 November 2019

ENLiquids is a project originating from Indiana which, since 2017, has been striving to release EPs at the speed of light. Its music logically goes as fast as its Bandcamp tours. The result is a little-produced garage punk (some would say, too little produced to pass the threshold) that intends to shine only by means of its melodies. This is precisely what 2 Soft Serves and a Hard Rock, a set of three lo-fi tracks reminiscent of the Nancy and Nobunny scene, does. “Don’t Wanna Get To Know You“, for instance, could be a demo of the Homosexuals. The compliment is matched only by Liquids’ cheesy ambition.

James Matthew VII

Stoned When I Pray
LP, Idée Fixe Records, 22 November 2019

ENJames Matthew VII, an artist originally from Toronto and now based in New York, released his debut album with the support of Burger Records on November 22nd. Largely influenced by the Flying Burrito Brothers, he proposes a temporal alteration that should give hives to all those addicted to Instagram and Facebook feeds. With James Matthew the Seventh, the music has a surfy and country feeling that imposes a new appreciation of long afternoons in the sun, taped to a bench at the thought of having to work a few muscles. James sometimes turns into a prophetic guru, proof of this is “Nickel and Dimin’“. The album is largely dominated by a bottleneck is meant to herald a more apathetic planet. Where do I sign to join the sect?!
