Pinch Points

LIVE at RRR
Live, 20 March 2020

ENOne of the very best representatives of the post-skate scene, Pinch Points recently had the terrific idea of releasing a live album. If we know all the tracks by heart, it’s impossible not to get caught up in the cathartic hurricane the band is here proposing. “Liquid Stone – Ground Up – System Failure” would make Parquet Courts cry. With this album, it becomes evident that post-skaters are among the best performers in the entire world. By recording the first live LP of its kind, Pinch Points just made it to the history of underground music.

Mapache

From Liberty Street
LP, Yep Roc Records, 20 March 2020

ENI‘m not used to writing about folk music anymore. The genre has become flat; it doesn’t say much anymore except “look how I am“. But things are different with Mapache. Mapache’s new album, From Liberty Street, is full of clichés, but they are the sweet clichés of country music that come up most often. If “Read Between The Lines” is the natural single of this album, “Face is Blue” and “Cherry Barb” are more innovative, more West Coast Pop Americana. In the end, Mapache is part of this movement which tends to rehabilitate southern music, although the band is from California. For Europeans like us, this may seem strange and folkloric, two reasons why we should devote more than a simple listening to this LP.

Plebs

Work
EP, 13 March 2020

ENThe general interest in the garage rock scene may be dying (study), but that doesn’t stop terrific releases from flourishing. Plebs is a great proof of this. The band originated from Melbourne just released a new EP on March 13th, and it’s excellent! The first song says everything we need to know about this entire collection of songs: the music is garage rock, the vocals are garage punk, and the intention is definitely laid back (see “Boring Yuppie Lifestyle“, currently running for the best heading of the year). If I sometimes find similarities with Idles, (see “Harassing“), the band finally delivers the typical sound of this slacker-Australia. “Manager” final is grandiose! No doubt, Plebs is among Oz’s best new bands.
