ENI’ve been told that cosmic country music is a thing. Ah. Well, if that’s the case, then I like cosmic country music. Sunset Canyoneers is an excellent example of what it can produce best, a Californian band releasing its first album on a Spanish label. Oriented toward southern sounds, it reminds me of those long dusty roads taken by Beat Generation, J.J. Cale, the Grateful Dead, CSNY, and Natural Child. The album is very faithful to itself, a genuine invitation to whiskey. And to the stars (so I’m told). Ah!

FRJe me suis laissé dire que la country cosmique était un style musical reconnu. Ah. Bon, et bien si tel est effectivement le cas, j’aime donc la country cosmique. Preuve en est avec Sunset Canyoneers, un groupe californien qui fait paraître son premier album sur un label espagnol. La chose est globalement très sudiste, elle me fait penser à ces longues routes poussiéreuses qu’ont emprunté la Beat Generation, J.J. Cale, les Grateful Dead, CSNY et Natural Child. L’album est très fidèle à lui-même, une véritable invitation au whisky. Et aux étoiles (me dit-on). Ah ! [titré préféré : “Bluejay“]

VAGUESS

Directions for Use
LP, Refry Records, 5 July 2020

ENThat’s right; here’s more Vaguess. I can’t get enough of it. My favorite patient zero is coming back these days with a new album called Directions for Use. More punk than usual, it blesses us with multiple UFO (playlist) and post-punk references. Stuffed with synthesizers, Vinny Vaguess tried the eighties and won them over. Nonetheless, I continue to favor his cowboy melodies a la “Fences.” They represent my favorite Vinny’s character: a skateboarder cowboy, without concession, but with a van.

FRYep, encore du Vaguess. Je n’en aurai jamais assez. Mon patient zéro préféré revient ces jours-ci avec un nouvel album intitulé Directions for Use. Plus punk qu’à l’habitute, il nous fait palpiter avec ses multiples références UFO (playlist) et post-punk. Bourré de synthétiseurs, Vinny Vaguess s’est essayé à la chose eighties, et a vaincu. Je continuais toutefois de me réfugier dans ses mélodies plus cowboy à la “Fences”. C’est, je trouve, le personnage qui le décrit le mieux : un cowboy skateur, sans concession, mais avec son p’tit van. [titré préféré : “Fences“]

Protomartyr

Ultimate Success Today
LP, Domino, 17 July 2020

ENI’ve never been a big fan of Protomartyr, and therefore, never wrote a single line about it. It took Ultimate Success Today to change my mind. Still too serious by moments, Protomartyr reminds me of that angry scene a la Idles. But the melodies also hit me hard and made fall for this non-smiley thing. Oriented towards progressive songs, “Processed By The Boys,” “Michigan Hammers” and “Worm in Heaven” are significant accomplishments. I leave the rest to these dudes with mustaches who give musicology lessons to anyone who wants to listen.

FRJe n’ai jamais été grand amateur de Protomartyr, pour cause, je n’avais jamais écrit la moindre ligne sur son compte. Il aura fallu Ultimate Success Today, son nouvel album, pour me faire changer d’avis. Si je le trouve toujours trop sérieux, les mélodies qui cognent bien fort ont fini de me faire adhérer à la chose non-souriante. Avec Ultimate Success Today, on tire la gueule comme sur un album de Idles, à la différent prêt que Protomartyr est davantage tourné vers les titres progressifs. “Processed By The Boys“, “Michigan Hammers” et “Worm in Heaven” me semblent particulièrement réussis. Je laisse le reste aux types à moustaches qui donnent des leçons de musicologie à qui veut bien les écouter. [titré préféré : “Processed By The Boys“]

Men I Trust

Forever Live Sessions

ENJust a few months ago, I was getting obsessed with the Men I Trust’s album Forever (article). I felt like I was betraying my garage community, but I couldn’t resist for long and was immersed in an album that reminded me of Twin Peaks. The announcement of the release of the demos/sessions of the tracks on this LP sent me back violently to last fall, to a time when everything was still… normal. How sweet. It only adds to the sensuality of this release, which should convince some people to go through it. For the pleasure, I accompany the album with the ineffable video of the track “Norton Commander.”

FRIl y a quelques mois à peine, je me faisais une maladie de l’album Forever du groupe Men I Trust (article). J’avais le sentiment de trahir ma communauté garage, mais je ne pouvais résister bien longtemps et me plongeais en plein dans un album qui me rappelait Twin Peaks. L’annonce de la parution des démos/sessions des titres de cet LP m’a donc violamment renvoyé à l’automne dernier, dans une époque où tout était encore… normal. Que c’est doux. Cela ne fait jamais que rajouter à la sensualité de cette sortie qui devrait finir d’en convaincre certains qui passeront par là. Pour le plaisir, j’accompagne l’album de l’ineffable vidéo du titre “Norton Commander“. [titré préféré : “Numb (garage session)“]
