Vintage Crop

Serve To Serve Again
LP, Upset The Rhythm, 7 August 2020

ENYeah, I’m about to be talking about post-skate. Vintage Crop has released an excellent LP during my summer vacation. With Serve To Serve Again, it decelerates a bit, approaching the songs more like post-punk pieces than real uppercut for hitting the slacker scene. But let us make no mistake, Vintage Crop has lost nothing of its ironic-passive-aggressive language as one can hear with the excellent “Streetview” – a song about gentrification, told with the phlegm of an old punk damaged by time. This track is extremely well constructed; this, generally speaking, is what distinguishes Serve To Serve Again from the band’s previous releases. The voice is well recorded, and the lyrics play also a central role as evidenced by “The Ladder” which makes a sharp criticism of social reproduction. It’s excellent! Only the finale – starting with “Just My Luck” and the story of a guy who doesn’t want to miss the bus – makes us think that Vintage Crop isn’t finished yet with the overflowing testosterone post-skate music for young adults. To put it differently, Serve To Serve Again has it all, it’s one of the great hits of 2020.

Helvetia

This Devastating Map
LP, Joyful Noise Recordings, 7 August 2020

ENMonths! I’ve been waiting several months for the release of this album. The video of “Reaktor” had indeed let me think the band was preparing its best LP. And it was, indeed. This Devastating Map was released just a few weeks ago, and I can’t get tired of listening to this pop music melted in a free jazz universe. “Devastating Map“, the very first song, is the quintessence of what’s coming. Helvetia seems to have listened to a lot of spectral pop music. He follows up with a noisier track and bridges the two with “How Does It Feel?“. In the end, the experience reminds me of Jackson Scott, it’s as mysterious yet groovy LP. Helvetia has created more of an experience than an album.

FRDes mois !

Cut Worms

Sold My Soul EP
EP, Jagjaguwar, 30 July 2020

ENCut Worms – the magician – will come back at the end of the year with a second LP testifying his Martian loves. In the meantime, he just released five mystical ritornello composed on a dusty old piano. His music reminds me of an old romance, somewhere between the 50s and the 70s. Maybe it’s the story of the Lost Generation. These songs have something of Hemmingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and other fallen poets. Yeah, there’s something of a lost greatness, which only adds to his music emotionality.

Quichenight

Tesago
LP, 7 August 2020

ENSeptember will sting. To remedy this, Quichenight offers a tropical experience to remind us of those long, empty days drinking cocktails on a deckchair – the kind we’ve never experienced. The songs follow one another with the nonchalance of a great jizz jazz album, the flow of an old guy who’s been sitting on a bench under the sun for too long, and the pop music of a fallen star (à la Durutti Column). The whole thing sounds desolate, which contrasts perfectly with Quichenight’s paradisiacal universe.
