Skegss

Fantasising
7inch, Loma Vista Recordings, 16 September 2020

ENI have a complicated relationship with Skegss. I had high hopes for the band a few years ago, but an interview with it convinced me of its bullshit. Instead of deleting all the unanswered questions, I decided to publish them all as they stand: here. And then, I called “Morons!” my article about its latest album (here). Yeah, but all that doesn’t stop me from liking Skegss anyway. Today, I bring the proof of my tough love with this little review on Fantasising. Although Skegss remains a slacker, I can’t help but find a certain pop finesse that would almost make me dance.

Goodbye 20 Hello 30

Look at Me
LP, My MIB Records, 2 October 2020

ENWhere is my Jurassic Park t-shirt? Goodbye 20 Hello 30 is a band from Bordeaux who has been saying its nineties love to anyone who will listen to it for about ten years now. These days, the band is releasing its sixth studio album, a new demonstration of all the indie rock power of the eternal decade. “Friend of da Week” and a few others oscillate between Dinosaur Jr. style music and something a bit (but only a bit!) grungier. This makes Look at Me ironic (see “Too Much Indie” – almost Dictators) without leaving out its Superchunk’s resemblance.

Green / Blue

Green/Blue
LP, Slovenly Recordings, 17 April 2020

ENI’ve been living with Green/Blue’s music in my living room for several weeks now, and I now have the feeling that each of its songs is a classic that can’t remain in the garage scene shadow for long. And yet, there is still a long way to go. Recommended to me by The Sueves, Green/Blue is a band from Minneapolis that released a very good debut album earlier this year. Listen to “With That Face“, it sounds like a hit worthy of today’s biggest names (à la Corners). The whole production of the album is excellent, Ariel Pink, watch out man!
