Total Revenge

Total Revenge
LP, Forged Artifacts, 4 September 2020

ENEvery January, it’s the same thing; I spend my time counting all the unforgivable omissions in my rankings. I start off strong this year with Total Revenge, which, in September 2020, released an excellent first LP. I missed it. Originally from Los Angeles, Ryan Pollie is one of those rare survivors who want to make garage rock the ultimate genre, whatever the cost. He reminds me of Paul Jacobs’ early EPs, how good it was. Overall, I take my hat off to him; Total Revenge’s first LP encapsulates the music that long represented Still in Rock’s essence. I’ll be sure to come back to it.

Dick Move

Chop!
LP, 16 October 2020

ENDick Move is a band from Auckland (New Zealand) who, last October, put its feminist post-punk out in a first album that deserves the laurels of the riot grrrl scene. What I like the most are punk songs that get us into trouble, such as “Ladies Night“. In fact, the darker and meaner Dick Move is, the better. The band will soon make a name for itself, and if it continues like this, a gang of true believers.

Viagra Boys

“In Spite Of Ourselves” (with Amy Taylor)
Single, YEAR0001, 16 December 2020

ENNot only is this song excellent, but it is also the best video of 2020 (rankings). Last December, Viagra Boys released one of the most extraordinary things of the past year: an ode to redneck life, sung with Amy Taylor of Amyl & the Sniffers. And it’s… perfect! The “redneck paradox” that I tried to describe in an article dated last January has never seemed so real: they are loved across the Atlantic (here across the Indian Ocean) while they are mocked in their own countries. Fuck, that makes me want to buy a tractor! Can’t wait for the album.

Vivement l’album.
