Kiwi jr.
ENThis is definitely the big outing of the week! I was saying a lot of good things about Kiwi jr. when I wrote my first article about the band in 2019. Soccer Money appeared on the excellent Mint Records. It was strong. Kiwi jr. has since made his way to Sub Pop Records, just like that. More than ever, its music is closer to the melodic irony of Pavement. More than ever, Kiwi jr. may claim a seat at the very top of the underground scene. Those who doubt the Canadian band (Toronto)’s ability to seize the Californian phlegm will be reassured with “Maid Marian’s Toast“. The rest oscillates between cool nineties and declaration of love to the jangle-pop scene that is so dear to Captured Tracks (see this new compilation). It’s frankly excellent, both contemporary (listen to the lyrics of “Cooler Returns“) and nostalgic of a golden era (“Omaha“). All this finally makes me think of my current place, Amsterdam.
