Viagra Boys

ENThe Viagra Boys feat Amy Taylor cover of “In Spite of Yourself” is a monument. I was talking about it last week, looking forward to listening to the whole album. Well… it’s not as good. There are certainly some very good tracks, often punk, always redneck. A real effort has been put into the instrumentalization—original, to say the least. The production is excellent. What I don’t like so much is the Franz Ferdinand side of a voice that comes through with a disco-free-jazz-but-rock-n-roll groove. The album gives the impression of being a rough draft—without being garage—despite the hours of artistic research behind it. Some people will like it.

FRLa reprise Viagra Boys / Amy Taylor de “In Spite of Yourself” est un monument. J’en parlais la semaine dernière, impatient d’écouter l’album en entier. C’est globalement moins bon. On y trouve certes de très bons morceaux, souvent punk, toujours redneck. Un véritable effort a été mis sur l’instrumentalisation qui est pour le moins originale. La production est excellente. Ce que j’aime moins, c’est le côté Franz Ferdinand d’une voix qui passe en force avec une instru’ disco-free-jazz-mais-rock-n-roll. Au résultat, l’album donne l’impression d’être brouillon—sans être garage—malgré les heures de recherche artistique. Ça plaira à certains.

Bad Nerves

Bad Nerves

ENA lot of English bands occupied Still in Rock when I created it back in 2010. This is no longer the case. Oh, there are a few exceptions—Idles, The Wytches, and a handful of others—but the rule is American-Australian. Bad Nerves plays on both fronts. The band hails from Essex (U.K.) but never misses an opportunity to say its love for power pop and bubblegum punk. Its debut album, released last November, is a real hit machine. Go and spend a few hours there; such machinations are too rare to be ignored. It goes fast, maybe a little too much (and non-stop), but it’s good. Long live the 70s, long live latex, long live Bad Nerves.

FRLorsque j’ai créé Still in Rock, en 2010, beaucoup de groupes anglais occupaient les quelques lignes que je voulais bien écrire. Ce n’est plus le cas. Oh, il y a certes quelques exceptions, Idles, The Wytches et une poignée d’autres, mais la règle est américano-australienne. Bad Nerves joue sur les deux fronts. Le groupe est originaire d’Essex (U.K.), mais il ne rate jamais une occasion de dévoiler son amour pour la power pop et le punk bubblegum. Son premier album, paru en novembre dernier, est une véritable à hits, comme le sont les meilleurs albums du genre. Allez y passer quelques heures, de telles machinations sont trop rares pour être ignorées. Ça va vite, peut-être un peu trop (et non-stop), mais c’est bon. Vive les 70s, vive le latex, vive Bad Nerves.

Oh Sees

Weirdo Hairdo (+ a new live)

ENWhat more can I say? I’ve spent each of the last few months talking about Oh Sees, which, as I said already, I consider to be the best band of the 2010s. I’m always happy to see that John Dwyer won’t let us down, as evidenced by three new songs under the name Weirdo Hairdo, and a live album. “Don’t Blow Your Mind” is a near-return to more humanized music, after the war against robots of the band’s last releases. I want more.

FRQue dire de plus ? J’ai passé chacun de ces quelques derniers mois à parler de Oh Sees—groupe que je tiens comme étant le meilleur de la décennie 2010s. Je me réjouis à chaque fois de constater que John Dwyer ne nous laissera pas tomber, preuve en est ces derniers jours avec trois nouveaux titres regroupés sous le nom de Weirdo Hairdo, et un live. “Don’t Blow Your Mind” opère un presque-retour à une musique plus humanisée, après la guerre contre les robots de ses dernières parutions. J’veux la suite.

We Are Joiners

ENI’ll tell you something: I missed listening to good garage rock, produced at the drop of a hat, but melodic and energetic. We Are Joiners is a band from Groningen, a small town in the north of the Netherlands that I don’t really invite you to visit. Its first LP was released last December, respecting all the codes of the genre. If it is difficult to find information about the band, it seems that We Are Joiners is Kevin Sun’s project and is determined to bring the garage scene to life. It is unfortunately too little represented in the Netherlands. “Alternators” and “Wee Creeper” are there to console me.

FRJ’vais vous dire un truc : écouter un bon gros garage rock, produit à l’arrache mais mélodico-énergique, ça m’avait bien manqué. We Are Joiners, c’est un groupe originaire de Groningue, petite ville du nord des Pays-Bas que je ne vous invite pas vraiment à visiter. Il n’empêche qu’elle a accouché d’un très bon groupe de garage qui, en décembre dernier, a fait paraître son premier LP en respectant tous les codes du genre. S’il est difficile de trouver des infos à son sujet, il semblerait que We Are Joiners soit le projet de Kevin Sun, et qu’il soit déterminé à faire vivre la scène garage qui est malheureusement trop peu représentée aux Pays-Bas. “Alternators” et “Wee Creeper” sont là pour me consoler.
