ENJust a few weeks ago, I compiled the best bands of the French scene. I was told that there was a lot of Howlin Banana Records in it. Yeah, and? Again, I wanted to list the very best of the scene, so… Here we go again! This time, Howlin Banana comes back with Unschooling, a post-punk band from Rouen. And let me be as clear as possible: a band capable of “More is More” is meant for great things. The more it goes by, the more I tell myself that Bench Press captured the revival of the post-punk scene in just a few words: “Devo is having a real zeitgeist moment right now”. “Social Chameleon” will be enough to convince you. And who knows, maybe Unschooling will end up on the post-skate side of the dark force.

FRIl y a quelques semaines à peine, je compiler les meilleurs groupes de la scène française. On me disait qu’il y avait beaucoup de Howlin Banana Records, “quand même”. Ouais, et ? J’avais effectivement bien parlé du meilleur de la scène, alors… Rebelote ! Cette fois-ci, Howlin Banana revient accompagné de Unschooling, un groupe de post-punk originaire de Rouen. Et laissez-moi être le plus clair possible : un groupe capable de “More is More” est nécessairement destiné à de très belles choses. Plus les minutes passent, et plus je me dis que Bench Press a su capter le renouveau de la scène post-punk en quelques mots à peine : “Devo is having a real zeitgeist moment right now”. “Social Chameleon” suffira à vous en convaincre. Et qui sait, peut-être que Unschooling finira du côté post-skate de la force.

Big Smoke
EP, Hassle Records, 16 April 2021

ENIn March, I put the cards on the table: “If we can fear overproduction (it’s often what happens to English bands), gloo sticks to the kind of teenage rock that would please all the fans of college movies”. Well, it holds, at least for now. His new EP has just been released, and he does indeed come on strong. The voice has a Pist Idiots-like bogus side that works very well. In fact, lost in the middle of his American quarterback feeling, Gloo has a little mule/tractor side that I really like. That’s what “Big Smoke” and “Work so Hard” suggest. Excellent!

FREn mars, je posais les cartes sur la table : “Si l’on peut craindre une sur-production (c’est souvent ce qui arrive aux groupes anglais), gloo s’en tient pour l’instant à du teenage rock qui ferait plaisir à tous les amateurs de film college”. Ça semble toujours tenir. Son nouvel EP vient tout juste de sortir, et s’il passe effectivement en force, la voix à un côté bogus à la Pist Idiots qui fonctionne très bien. En fait, perdu au milieu de ses airs de quarterback américain, gloo a un p’tit côté mulet/tracteur qui me plait beaucoup. C’est en tout cas ce que laissent entendre “Big Smoke” et “Work so Hard”. Excellents.

Gee Tee

Live N’ Dangerous II

ENHave you seen The Warriors (1979)? Not only does the cover of the new Gee Tee release remind me of it, but its music seems to fit perfectly with the fight-gangs-armageddon thing. The label says this cover is a “shitty mockup of what it will look like”, but it would be wise to keep it intact. If Live N’ Dangerous II has already been released last October by Warttmann Inc, it is now being released on vinyl by the great Sweet Time (link). More than the other bands of the Martian scene, Gee Tee seems to be the object of a strange cult. It is well deserved. His fluorescent green rock’n’roll is to be put in all the wrong hands.

FREst-ce que vous avez vu The Warriors (1979) ? Non seulement la pochette de cette nouvelle sortie Gee Tee m’y fait penser, mais en plus, sa musique me semble coller parfaitement à la chose baston-gangs-armageddon. Le label indique que cette pochette est un “shitty mockup of what it will look like”, mais il serait bien avisé de la garder intacte. Si Live N’ Dangerous II est déjà paru en octobre dernier chez Warttmann Inc., il voit cette fois-ci le jour en vinyle chez les très bons Sweet Time (lien). Gee Tee semble, plus que les autres groupes de la scène martienne, faire l’objet d’un drôle de culte. C’est bien mérité. Son rock’n’roll vert fluorescent est à mettre entre toutes les mauvaises mains.

Potential Johns

ENI’m taking advantage of a slight dip in the news (and my frantic race for novelty) to talk about Potential Johns (2002–2010). While I was spending my Friday night skimming the list of Jeff Burke’s bands (Market Men, Radioactivity…), I came across this band from the 2000s which, with only a dozen tracks to its credit, made me easily fall in love with it. If there are some very post-2001 / Strokes songs in his discography (see “Can I Really Not Go With You“), I don’t think I’ll ever get over “Past Due“. When you look for information about him, you quickly come across obscure blogspots that remind me of the early days of Still in Rock. Yeah, Potential Johns is my Proust’s madeleine… my youth that is leaving noisily. A ticket back to the future that is in fact past already…

FRJe profite d’un léger creux dans l’actualité (et ma course frénétique à la nouveauté) pour parler des Potentiel Johns (2002–2010). Alors que je passais mon vendredi soir à écumer la liste des groupes de Jeff Burke (Market Men, Radioactivity…), je suis tombé sur ce groupe des années 2000′ qui, avec seulement une dizaine de morceaux à son actif, me fait tomber de joie. Si on trouve dans sa discographie quelques morceaux très post-2001 / très Strokes (voir “Can I Really Not Go With You“), je ne crois pas un jour me remettre de “Past Due“. Lorsque l’on cherche des informations à son sujet, on tombe rapidement sur des blogspots obscures qui me rappellent les premiers jours de Still in Rock. Ouais, Potential Johns, c’est ma madeleine de Proust. Ma jeunesse qui part bruyamment. Un retour vers le futur qui est en fait passé. [n’étant pas sur les plateformes streaming, voici le mp3, pour ceux que ça intéresse encore)
