Helvetia

“Rocks on the Ramp“

Single, Joyful Noise Recordings, 13 May 2021

ENLast April, Helvetia released the first single from his new album, Essential Aliens. I said it was more nervous than the tracks of his previous album, but he’s back these days with “Rock on the Ramp“, a semi-psychedelic bedroom excellent pop song. Borrowing the music from Duster, and the voice from Yo La Tengo, Helvetia manages to find the right balance between nineties melancholy and modern reveries. This track is certainly making his LP one of the most awaited of the year 2021. The release is scheduled for June 25. We’re watching.

Paintwork

Angles & Planes

LP, 23 April 2021

ENOn the Bandcamp description of his album, Paintwork confides: “Recorded at blue house in 2017-2018, sat on for four years. Probably wore my influences a little too much on my sleeve at the time, but I think it deserves to be out there”. If I had to identify these influences, I would mention Parquet Courts, and Tyvek. I would refer to the DIY scene of the early 2010s, and I would say that despite its obvious influences, Angles & Planes is a very good LP. “Blue and Vague” is a natural single, while the following song is great post-skate music. Paintwork, you have our attention…

FRSur la description bandcamp de l’album, Paintwork nous confie : “Recorded at blue house in 2017-2018, sat on for four years. Probably wore my influences a little too much on my sleeve at the time, but I think it deserves to be out there”. Paintwork, tu as désormais notre attention…

Snooper

Snõõper

EP, Goodbye Boozy Records, 14 May 2021

ENSnooper is one of those bands that brilliantly enliven the egg punk scene. It is also a mystery. While this style of music is associated with anti-capitalism / anti-system, Snooper reveals only a part of its EP on its Bandcamp, as if to push us to buy it. Well, okay. For the rest, Snõõper is a very good EP that, as the band says on the first song, is a form of mutation that wants to go fast. If I was already including one of its singles on my Martian playlist (link), I think I need to add one or two more.

Babe Rainbow

Changing Colours

LP, Flightless Records, 14 May 2021

ENI said it several times, I had doubts about Babe Rainbow for a long time. I thought it was a commercial operation, faithful to our blank generation. But Double Rainbow sent the band to another planet: that of great psychedelic music. Today followed in 2019, and Babe Rainbow is coming back these days with Changing Colours. Without changing too much his magic formula, he introduces more Latin sounds to his music, making this LP the perfect companion for a grey spring.
