Anachronique: The Stranglers (Punk Rock)
The Stranglers. Formed in 1974, this English rock band is hard to pin down. Still active, The Stranglers are the band of every excess: they turned down 24 record labels, recorded almost all of their first two records in 6 days, spent a large part of their fees repairing the damage caused by their fans at their concerts, were often hateful towards the English press; the leader, JJ Burnel, is a convinced anti-American; he loved making his audience believe he was playing to a backing tape when he was not, told a live crowd in San Francisco that they were worthless compared to the one in L.A., and so on.
Known for their excellent “Golden Brown“, surely not the most representative track since it is excessively pop, it nonetheless remains a superb single that has stood and will stand the test of time. For a long time the band claimed it was about burnt toast. It is actually a story about heroin and a girl. “Strange Little Girl” (here) is of the same ilk. “Peaches” (here) is a more punk track, more faithful to the Stranglers’ dark world. “Nice N’ Sleazy” (here) is also one of their flagship tracks, at once post-punk and accessible, a very rare cocktail. Finally, it would be incongruous to conclude this post without mentioning the great “Walk On By” (here) and its outsized guitar solo. Also, “Nuclear Device” (here), being one of their most humorous tracks, surely deserves a few listens, just like “Waltzinblack” (here).
Those nicknamed the MenInBlack for always being dressed in black, authors of 17 studio albums, should go on haunting the minds of their many detractors for a long time. And so much the better.
