Gang of Four (Punk)

Anachronique: Gang of Four (Punk)
Gang of Four. And here is another anachronistic article that was close to my heart. Gang of Four is a band from Leeds (UK). Formed in 1977, the band quickly released an EP and a first album. Entertainment! is the name of that first attempt, released in 1979. Seven records would follow, never matching what Entertainment! managed to do: deliver sounds that are punk and groovy at the same time. Listening to Gang of Four takes you straight back to late-’70s England, a time when the best Punk bands sprang up on every street corner, many of them going on to leave their mark on music history forever. As Gang of Four itself said, good Rock is never made without sweat. Entertainment! reeks of sweat.
After three interesting tracks, Gang of Four delivers its first brilliant one: “Damaged Goods“. Hard to describe all the energy this track carries. I will not hide it, this track is the reason for this article. There, I said it. “Return the Gift” immediately keeps afloat all the adrenaline injected by the previous seconds. It is unstoppable. The total lack of structure in “Guns Before Butter” makes this track one of the album’s essentials. “I Found That Essence Rare” then has little trouble getting started (1, 1, 1, 1-2-3-4), but how can you not see it as a reply to the Clash?! “Contract” is the perfect demonstration of what I was explaining above: the groove of this track is irresistible.
“At Home He’s a Tourist“, despite an incomprehensible title, makes sense immediately. Devo is not far away. “Anthrax” is to this day Gang of Four’s best-known track. The distortion of the guitars and the crazy rhythm set by the drums are enough to make your head spin. This track, officially the last on the album, was followed by a few other creations on the 1995 Infinite Zero reissue. The first is “Outside the Trains Don’t Run on Time“, a track that still gives a prominent place to the bass without lacking a nicely sharp guitar. The second of these bonus tracks is “He’d Send in the Army“, in my view one of Gang of Four’s best. I called some of the other creations irresistible, but then what can be said about this one? Everybody into the warehouse, Gang of Four is putting on a show! The experimental side à la CAN (article) is so thrilling. So, who is buying a ticket to Leeds 1979 with me?
