Live Review: The Dictators at Mécanique Ondulatoire in Paris (Punk Rock)
On 18 November, only a few days after the Paris attacks, The Dictators played one of those gigs that will stay etched in the memory of everyone who was there.
The feeling of defiance was palpable throughout the whole room. We were there for two reasons: the first, to witness the punk genius of one of the greatest bands of the genre, The Dictators. The second, to show the whole world our fury to live, nothing less. Located a few steps from Rue de Charonne, the Mécanique Ondulatoire, a true church for rock’n’roll lovers, was the obvious choice for the perfect venue, the perfect night. And so it was!
The Dictators, as I wrote in the anachronique article devoted to them (link), are one of the greatest legendary bands still alive. Seeing them is seeing a part of rock’n’roll history, a huge influence without which one may doubt that the ’77 CBGB-generation punk scene would have been the same. Its leader, Andy “Adny” Shernoff, shows barely believable energy. You would have sworn you had been plunged right into the CBGB of the glory days, when bands were barely 20 and punk was stirring up the coolest and most creative circles in New York City.

The Dictators’ set was a success in every respect. They are one of those bands that know how to introduce a song, and each one got a short introduction, galvanising the crowd of connoisseurs. While the Dictators had been booked at the Trabendo, whose capacity is much larger than the Méca’s, it is clear that the change of venue skimmed off the visitors to leave only the fiercest admirers.
Almost all their hits were played, from “Weekend“, through “California Sun“, “Two Tub Man“, “(I Love For) Cars and Girls“, all the way to “Pussy and Money“. The Dictators even treated us to a cover of the MC5’s “Kick Out The Jams” (see article). 1h30 later, the evidence was more dazzling than ever: the Dictators’ discography is phenomenal, covered by the Ramones and many others…
So the moment was too beautiful for me not to film part of it, a memory I will cherish for a long time. The Dictators dedicated their show to all the victims and to the young people who were there last Wednesday night, urging them to live all the more. Without the same class or the same legitimacy, I will allow myself to do the same here.
