En 2019, soyons twee avec HoneyBunch

English version · automatic translation
In 2019, let’s be twee with HoneyBunch
The greatest nineties bands make me feel immense frustration at the thought of not having been part of the party. I was too young back then. And while I keep repeating that we are probably living through the best musical decade in history (I am the Pinker of garage), I cannot help missing the irony mixed with carefreeness of the 90s decade.
HoneyBunch gives me that feeling, so I imagine it is among the best, or at least among the best of twee music, alongside Tullycraft, Garageland and Blake Babies. The band started in 1989 with a single released on The Bus Stop Label. It was “Hey Blue Sky!“, probably its most single-ish track. It then released various albums and EPs, some on Slumberland Records. Everything is compiled on an absolute essential: Time Trials 1987-1995, released that same year via Summershine, Summershine.
It is twee, very twee. The band’s name says so as much as its music. The lyrics are deliberately very sugary, the music never attacks and the melodies are as many little portions of cupcake as it takes to fill up the whole city of Providence, where the band comes from. So I wanted to talk about it a little to start the year gently. And while I sometimes feel like I am in a dialogue with myself when writing Still in Rock, while I question myself, I am going to carry on a little longer.
Forgive my impatience, but I will only talk here about the very best. “Hey Blue Sky“, the very first, is the most natural candidate for the title of Hit. Jeffrey Underhill asserts here what cuddlecore music would be, that’s right, indie pop for cuddling one another. And those lyrics… “Candy Breath” sets off the refrain of love songs. While its intro seems to lean towards shoegaze, HoneyBunch quickly catches the melody with its warm pop arrangements.
“My Contribution To The Greenhouse Effect” pulls more towards the sounds of Tullycraft, a touch more garage. It is not the only one. “Remember You Always” does that too. And then there are stranger songs, I am thinking of “Sticks And Stones” and “I Won’t Stand In Your Way“. The first is a melo-romantic ballad that is a reminder that this decade killed off love songs. The second is so delicate that the Care Bears would seem like villains.
And sometimes HoneyBunch is the king of twee, more twee than Wes Anderson. On “Mine Your Own Business“, it advises us to be open-minded, no kidding. “Always Someone Else’s Shadow” goes in the same direction and “The Great Divide” finishes us off with what sounds like the local priest’s sermon. “Tapeworm” wraps it all up, with panache, with nineties and crunchy sounds.
In the end, HoneyBunch was not one of the leaders of the twee movement for nothing. Its songs are the result of a skilful mix of sugariness and nineties cynicism. They are all melodic, because with this kind of album, the band is trying to please the whole world. What is paradoxical is that this typically 90s twee style never reached the general public. For a while it satisfied the American scene that wanted to make up for the apparent nastiness of the grunge crowd.
This year, I have decided to use Still in Rock to hit out at what annoys me. 2019 will not be bitter, it will be fun. But because our society falls into every extreme, I am going along with it too by offering a first article for 2019 that is the exact opposite of what may be most virulent in the weeks to come.
